Shuttleworth, Bill

“Bill Shuttleworth, PhD, is a neuroscientist who has spent most of his research career sequestered in darkened laboratories, looking down microscopes to study how individual brain cells work and how to minimize brain injuries. However, he is also passionate about making sure that research is connected with our communities. He has led efforts to bring community members onto campus to see different types of research in action, and also to take laboratory scientists outside their comfort zones to work with community advocacy groups off campus.

Shuttleworth received his PhD in physiology from the University of Melbourne, Australia, and began postdoctoral training in the US in 1991. He moved to the University of New Mexico (UNM) in 1998, and is active in medical school and graduate student teaching as a professor in the Department of Neurosciences. He also directs UNM’s Brain and Behavioral Health Institute and is an associate director for UNM’s Clinical and Translational Science Center.”
