“I have to say all stuff I learned about the Civil War in history classes in middle school, high school and college – it didn’t match the experience of making the film. I think that the letters and diaries that they were finding, to make voice excerpts from, were so extraordinary to me, the language was so beautiful and it brought those characters to life in such wonderful ways that I suddenly understood the history so much better because it was personalized.”
