The Line: Role Of Local Government In Turning The Economic Tide

NMiF: The Line Panel

June 22, 2018 – Local media reported this week that Moody’s Investor Services had downgraded the state’s bond rating. A report in the Albuquerque Journal indicated workers in New Mexico are making less than the national average in many instances. And this week, Albuquerque agreed to give Topgolf roughly 2 ½ million in incentives, and only minor clawbacks, to build an entertainment complex in the city -  despite Mayor Keller’s veto, which the council overrode.. Are local and state governments doing the right things to turn around our economy? Gene Grant and the Line opinion panel ponder the question and come up with some answers.

June 8, 2018 – Topgolf is an international chain of sports bar-type theme parks built around golf. The company says it needs $2.6 million in incentives to build in Albuquerque, and there are supporters on the city council. But details – such as adding possible clawbacks to the deal – still need to be worked out before the final vote on June 18, and some on the council are urging caution.  Gene Grant and the Line panelists debate the merits and pitfalls of such incentive packages.
