Counting down the top stories of 2017, part 1

NMiF: Top Stories of 2017

This week on New Mexico in Focus, host Gene Grant and a special Line panel of local journalists begin a countdown of the top stories of 2017. They discuss five of those topics this week, including the veto showdown at the Roundhouse and the impact of President Trump’s administration on New Mexico during the past year.

Correspondent Antonia Gonzales sits down with two experts who delve into the histories of both early New Mexico and Florida. Dr. Aimee Villarreal was a producer and researcher on an animated film about the historic Pueblo Revolt of 1680 in New Mexico. Dr. Kathleen Deagan is an anthropologist and archeologist whose work is featured in a documentary about Spanish Florida.

“Secrets of Spanish Florida: A Secrets of the Dead Special” will air on New Mexico PBS on December 26, at 7:00 PM.

The Line: Corruption Trial for Former Senator Phil Griego Begins

NMiF: Phil Griego

November 3, 2017 – Former New Mexico Senator Phil Griego is facing six felony and two misdemeanor charges in a corruption trial that started this week.  The criminal charges escalated from an ethics complaint that accused then-senator Griego of prepping the legislature to pass a resolution that allowed for a property sale which netted him a $50,000 profit. Does the trial signals a bigger shift in New Mexico politics than just a case against one former elected official? Gene Grant and the Line opinion panelists discuss the angles.

Line Panelists:
Tom Garrity, the Garrity Group PR
Viki Harrison, Common Cause New Mexico
Serge Martinez, professor, UNM School of Law
