“Vape” Documentary | Web Extra

August 30, 2019 – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a warning about e-cigarettes Friday, August 30, after an adult died in Illinois in what is believed to be a vaping-related emergency. In addition, cases of respiratory distress suspected by the CDC to be related to vaping have been reported in 25 states. The CDC warned against buying vaping products off the street, in part because of the possibility that they might contain illicit substances, including THC, the psychoactive ingredient in Cannabis. It also warned against vaping by children, teens and other vulnerable parts of the population. New Mexico PBS will air the locally produced documentary, “Vape”, on October 17 at 7 p.m. In it, documentarian Chris Schueler explores the addictive nature of e-cigarettes, whether kids are being targeted by marketers, and the potential dangers of vaping. In this segment, New Mexico in Focus Senior Producer Matt Grubs interviews public health consultant Shelley Mann-Lev and Dr. Shawn Sidhu, a child and adolescent psychiatrist who runs the University of New Mexico’s Health Sciences Center fellowship program in child psychiatry. Sidhu appears in “Vape” and Mann-Lev spent decades working with the Santa Fe Public Schools.
