The Line: Judge Overturns Ten Vetoes

August 17, 2017 – In late spring, New Mexico’s Legislative Council filed a lawsuit, arguing that 10 bills Governor Martinez vetoed during the 2017 legislative session should become law, saying that the governor did not follow proper veto procedures.   Last week, a district court judge overrode the vetoes.  Judge Sarah Singleton ordered Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse to put the bills into law once final paperwork goes through. Although an appeal is anticipated by Governor Martinez’s lawyer, the bills will probably take effect before an appeal can be heard.
