The Line: Judge Brett Kavanaugh Nominated To U.S. Supreme Court

July 13, 2018 – President Donald Trump has nominated Judge Brett Kavanaugh to fill the seat in the U.S. Supreme Court that retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy will vacate at the end of the month. Currently, the U.S. Supreme Court has a makeup of 5-4 in favor of conservatives. Brett Kavanaugh is considered more conservative than Anthony Kennedy is, and many Republicans, including New Mexico’s Rep. Steve Pearce, are praising his nomination. But the state’s Democratic congressional delegation has expressed concern, and liberal and progressive organizations have expressed fear that a Kavanaugh appointment will set back the cause of civil, LGBT, and women’s rights by decades. Gene Grant and the Line opinion panelists debate the choice of Judge Brett Kavanaugh for the U.S. Supreme Court, and discuss how his appointment might affect New Mexicans.
