The Line: Feds Approve New Mexico’s Education Plan

August 17, 2017 – New Mexico’s Public Education Department and Governor Susana Martinez are applauding the U.S. Department of Education’s decision to approve the state’s plan for adopting education reform standards under the Every Student Succeeds Act, or ESSA.  The plan received high ratings by an independent panel of educations, but not everyone is pleased.  Critics fear it gives the state’s education department too much control, and that local school districts should have more power to make major decisions. Host Gene Grant and this week’s Line opinion panelists debate the pros and cons of the plan.

Line Panelists:
Merritt Allen, Vox Optima LLC
Laura Sanchez-Rivét, attorney at Cuddy and McCarthy, LLP
Diane Snyder, former state senator
Harry Van Buren, professor in UNM Anderson School of Management
