June 7, 2019 – Last week, President Donald Trump announced in a tweet that he would start imposing a 5 percent tariff on goods from Mexico and would increase the tariff each month (with a cap at 25 percent in October) until Mexico stems the tide of migrants. Governor Lujan Grisham called it a potential economic catastrophe for our state, saying tens of thousands of jobs in New Mexico would be threatened. The tariffs are set to go into effect Monday, June 10, unless they are somehow prevented or postponed. Gene Grant and the Line opinion panelists weigh in on the tariffs’ potential consequences – and whether they might have an effect opposite to what the president has in mind.
