Bringing Back STEM Grads

NMiF: Brain Drain

December 15, 2017 – The so-called “brain drain” of talented young professionals from New Mexico is a topic that comes up often in New Mexico. There are many ideas for making sure recent graduates can find jobs and opportunities here. But what about those professionals who have already left but want to return home?

Maggie Werner-Washburne, regents’ professor emerita at UNM, put together an upcoming event to connect STEM professionals with employers and potential investors. The New Mexico Educated Workforce in STEM Symposium is taking place December 20-21 in Albuquerque.

Producer Sarah Gustavus sat down this week with Werner-Washburne, recent UNM graduate and former Albuquerque mayoral candidate Gus Pedrotty, and UNM PhD student Jacqueline DeLora to talk about potential solutions for addressing the brain drain and ensuring students and young professionals know what’s available for them in New Mexico.

What the national conversation about sexual harassment and assault means for New Mexico, connecting New Mexicans who have left the state with income opportunities to encourage their return home, plus the Line panel

This week on New Mexico in Focus, producer Sarah Gustavus sits down with an advocate from the Women’s Resource Center at UNM to talk about what the national conversation about sexual harassment and assault means for New Mexico.

Producer Sarah Gustavus also sits down with the organizer of a symposium showing how to match New Mexicans who have left the state, but want to return home, with employers and investors who can make that happen.

And NMiF host Gene Grant and the Line opinion panelists discuss top stories of the week, including the horrific random shooting death of two students at a high school in Aztec.  The Line also looks at sexual harassment allegations by a New Mexico lobbyist, and weighs in on the Lt. Governor’s race.
