Outgoing Santa Fe Opera Director Charles MacKay

August 31, 2018 – The Santa Fe Opera just wrapped up its 2018 season and general director Charles MacKay is retiring. Under his tenure, the opera has grown its financial resources and expanded its facilities. It also hosted two world premieres in recent years.

Although he became the general director in 2008, the opera has been part of his life since he was growing up in the 1960s in Santa Fe and saw his first opera there. The company’s net assets have grown to more than $100 million and the annual operating budget is now $24 million. MacKay also expanded the opera’s community outreach efforts and its young apprentice program.

Correspondent Megan Kamerick sits down with MacKay this week to talk about his work with the opera and where he’s headed next.
