Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham & Criminal Justice Philosophies

Two women in conversation; one faces away from the camera, and the other is seated in front of a U.S. flag, speaking and gesturing, against a blue backdrop.

This week on New Mexico in Focus, you’ll get a chance to watch our annual, exclusive interview with Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham during the legislative session. Politics correspondent Gwyneth Doland spoke with the governor for 35 minutes. We couldn’t fit the entire interview in the show, but you can watch it on our YouTube channel. Also online, you can hear what the governor thinks about her legacy and plans for the future. As for what you will see if you tune in Friday night or watch the full episode online, the governor explains her approach to governing a state that voted blue in a country that turned red on the federal level. Education, energy and growing anxiety around federal immigration action round out the first segment of Gwyneth’s interview.

Those are all hugely important issues we didn’t want to pass over, but of course, we all know the issue taking center stage in Santa Fe during the 60-day session is public safety. That’s where Gwyneth spends the second half of her interview with the governor.

But that’s not all we have for you on the topic. Executive Producer Jeff Proctor sits down with two people with different perspectives on law enforcement and incarceration for a conversation, not a debate, about the future of criminal justice in our state. Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman and longtime civil rights lawyer Peter Cubra join Jeff for a discussion unique to NMiF. The three talk about some specific legislative proposals, but also delve deeper into the underlying causes of crime. And they discuss possible long and short-term solutions to the behavioral health crisis that swirls around any discussion about public safety.

We hope you enjoy the show.
