February 19, 2021 – Next Tuesday is Rep. Dep Haaland’s first stop on her journey as President Joe Biden’s pick to lead the U.S. Department of the Interior. The New Mexico Democrat’s first confirmation hearing takes place Feb. 23 before the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, as conservative senators have begun to say they’ll oppose or even try to block her nomination on the grounds that she’s opposed to fracking. The Line opinion panel assesses Haaland’s chances to win the nomination and digs through both the importance and the controversy that mark her selection.
