Chaves County Police Shooting Lawsuit

6.24.2022 –Attorney general Hector Balderas is investigating a deadly deputy-involved shooting that killed 34-year-old David Aguilera. This is the second deadly police shooting in the county within a year. The sister of 25-year-old Oscar Najera is suing commissioners over her brother’s June 2021 death. Police shot and killed him, claiming he was reaching for something in his waistband. He was unarmed. One of the lawsuits alleges the Chaves County Sheriff, “enthusiastically hires known ‘problem cops’ from other departments.” A second lawsuit has been filed against the Law Enforcement Academy board for failing to make sure officers are properly trained and certified.
