Re-connecting With A Healthy Lifestyle: Replacing Soda With Water

NMiF: Healthy Lifestyle

November 3, 2017 – One way to address high obesity rates in Native American communities is to encourage families to drink less soda and more water. The STAR school near Leupp, Arizona is offering several incentives for students to swap out water for sugar-sweetened beverages. Correspondent Antonia Gonzales and producer Sarah Gustavus traveled to the Navajo Nation recently to examine how a lack of access to water in many homes influences beverage choices and what might be done to increase water consumption among young people.

This series was produced with support from the USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism and the Dennis A. Hunt Fund for Health Journalism in collaboration with National Native News.

This week on New Mexico in Focus, correspondent Antonia Gonzales and producer Sarah Gustavus travel to the Navajo Nation for the series “Reconnecting with a Healthy Lifestyle.” They explore what’s being done to fight diabetes and obesity by reducing consumption of soda and sugary beverages, and look at one school’s innovative way to get filtered water to more people on the Navajo Nation. Their coverage is supported by the USC Annenberg National Fellowship and the Dennis A. Hunt Fund for Health Journalism.

Correspondent Megan Kamerick sits down with author, speaker and death educator Gail Rubin to discuss why thinking about your death can be a good way to celebrate your life.
