Our Land: Preparing Homes For Fire Season

March 8, 2018 – This month on Our Land, we visit with tree ring scientist Tom Swetnam, a professor emeritus at the University of Arizona. Swetnam has studied forest ecology and fire regimes in the southwestern United States, including in the Jemez Mountains, where he returned to live a few years ago. But Swetnam isn’t just peering into the distant past. He’s also well-aware of the fire dangers in the Jemez, where he has worked to thin trees on his own property, shared knowledge with neighbors, and helped his local community understand how to keep their homes and neighborhoods safer from fire–and protect firefighters, too.
