Small Towns, Big Change: New Initiative Aims To Address Opiate Addiction From Multiple Angles

August 5, 2016 – Heroin and opiate addiction is a growing problem across the country, but it’s also a familiar concern in Rio Arriba county. Local health officials have tried for years to reduce the number of overdose deaths in the county. A new initiative called Pathways aims to bring new resources to the fight but not everyone agrees that it’s the best approach.

New Mexico PBS is part of a pilot project with the Solutions Journalism Network that aims to increase coverage of solutions-oriented reporting in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. In this week’s story for Small Towns, Big Change, correspondent Megan Kamerick takes us to Española to learn more about the Pathways model.
