May 13, 2016 – The University of New Mexico announced<\/a> in the beginning of May that WisePies Arena, which most locals know as The Pit, will no longer host the annual Gathering of Nations<\/a> event due to loss of revenue.<\/p>\n

UNM ended their contract with\u00a0GON\u00a0after the conclusion of the 2016 event. Officials said the event was “costly” to the athletic department because of the extra need for police and security as well as other operational costs.<\/p>\n

GON has not yet\u00a0announced plans to either move the event to another location in Albuquerque or a different city.\u00a0“We understand that other venues, such as Expo New Mexico have expressed an interest in hosting future events, and we offer our support in helping make the transition to a new site,” said UNM Vice President David Harris\u00a0said in a news release<\/a>.<\/p>\n
