April 15, 2016 – This week\u00a0New Mexico In Focus<\/em>\u00a0looks at\u00a0safety concerns for bicyclists and pedestrians. We bring you the new documentary\u00a0\u201cHikers, Bikers and Automobiles<\/a>\u201d from local filmmaker Chris Schueler. The film\u00a0features doctors, city planners, community members and other advocates who are addressing safety for all people on the roads of communities across the state.<\/p>\n

New Mexico currently ranks\u00a0second in the nation for the number of\u00a0cyclists killed on the road in recent years, according to the state Department of Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Recently, the City of Albuquerque\u2019s Department of Municipal Development (DMD) announced a new project<\/a> that will give bicyclists more room to enjoy the roads. The initiative calls for narrowing driving lanes 2 feet, widening bike lanes to up to 6 feet and adding a buffer between bike lanes and driving lanes. This project will be at the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave NE and Broadway Blvd, but the city aims\u00a0to implement this on other intersections across Albuquerque.<\/p>\n

Host Gene Grant sits down this\u00a0week with a special line panel.\u00a0Marisa Demarco<\/a>, a\u00a0public health reporter for KUNM talks about their coverage of many different angles surrounding this issue. Don McIver tells us about his family’s experience\u00a0giving up\u00a0cars and using\u00a0only bicycles as a means of\u00a0transportation for several years. Ann Overstreet from\u00a0Bike ABQ<\/a>\u00a0describes how her organization\u00a0is working to\u00a0bring\u00a0safe bicycle riding in the Land of Enchantment. And Melissa Lozoya from the\u00a0Department of Municipal Development for city of Albuquerque<\/a>\u00a0shares what the city is doing to address safety for pedestrians and cyclists.<\/p>\n
