{"id":8300,"date":"2016-03-04T08:00:27","date_gmt":"2016-03-04T15:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newmexicopbs.org\/productions\/newmexicoinfocus\/?p=8300"},"modified":"2020-06-02T10:02:11","modified_gmt":"2020-06-02T17:02:11","slug":"what-does-the-end-of-no-child-left-behind-mean-for-teachers-in-nm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newmexicopbs.org\/productions\/newmexicoinfocus\/what-does-the-end-of-no-child-left-behind-mean-for-teachers-in-nm\/","title":{"rendered":"What Does The End of No Child Left Behind Mean For Teachers In NM?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>March 4, 2016 &#8211; Students in New Mexico\u00a0will soon close their textbooks and begin another year of<a href=\"http:\/\/parcc.pearson.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> PARCC<\/a>\u00a0testing, unless parents opt their children out of the test.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, some students protested the test by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newmexicopbs.org\/productions\/newmexicoinfocus\/student-protests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">walking out of class<\/a>. \u00a0A group of\u00a0teachers also sat down with <em>New Mexico in Focus<\/em> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newmexicopbs.org\/productions\/newmexicoinfocus\/teachers-talk-about-evaluations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">discuss their concerns<\/a> about how the test was administered and how the Public Education Department plans to use results to measure teacher performance.<\/p>\n<p>The dispute over teacher evaluations has\u00a0\u00a0now turned into a court battle. In December, a judge issued a temporary injunction in a legal case to prevent the use of PARCC\u00a0results in teacher evaluations until the lawsuit is resolved.<\/p>\n<p>Our correspondent Stan Wilson sat down recently with Ellen Bernstein from the <a href=\"http:\/\/atfunion.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Albuquerque Teachers Federation<\/a> and teacher Marisa Silva-Dunbar talk about recent changes to the No Child Left Behind Act, the\u00a0struggles some low-income students \u00a0face and how schools are helping students overcome those challenges and succeed academically.<\/p>\n<p>This week, Stan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newmexicopbs.org\/productions\/newmexicoinfocus\/aps-administrator-talks-about-how-the-district-is-using-current-parcc-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">also discusses<\/a> PARCC test data and what happens when students opt out with\u00a0Rose-Ann McKernan from the Office of Accountability &amp; Reporting at Albuquerque Public Schools.<\/p>\n<p><em>New Mexico in Focus<\/em> made several attempts to schedule an interview with Education Secretary Hanna Skandera\u00a0but her staff did not respond to our requests.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EObig0markI\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>March 4, 2016 &#8211; Students in New Mexico\u00a0will soon close their textbooks and begin another year of PARCC\u00a0testing, unless parents opt their children out of the test.
