{"id":6831,"date":"2015-10-09T10:17:49","date_gmt":"2015-10-09T17:17:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newmexicopbs.org\/productions\/newmexicoinfocus\/?p=6831"},"modified":"2020-06-02T10:05:23","modified_gmt":"2020-06-02T17:05:23","slug":"local-resources-for-domestic-violence-victims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newmexicopbs.org\/productions\/newmexicoinfocus\/local-resources-for-domestic-violence-victims\/","title":{"rendered":"Local Resources For Domestic Violence Victims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Amanda Nezzie<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This week on\u00a0<em>New Mexico in Focus<\/em>, correspondent Stan Wilson focuses on workplace safety and domestic violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDomestic violence survives because it is a secret,\u201d reveals\u00a0Lynn GentryWood, executive director of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dvrcnm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Domestic Violence Resource Center<\/a> (DVRC)\u00a0in Albuquerque.<\/p>\n<p>One\u00a0warning sign of\u00a0domestic violence that co-workers and managers might observe is stalking.\u00a0\u201cHuman Resources and administration need to make sure they are opening up dialogue by giving a comfortable atmosphere for talking about domestic violence,\u201d says\u00a0GentryWood, adding \u201cbusinesses need to know they can do something before it escalates into fatalities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/niosh\/docs\/2006-144\/pdfs\/2006-144.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report on workplace violence prevention<\/a> that companies &#8220;create a culture of support for victims that includes assurances no penalties exist for coming forward, complete confidentiality will be observed, safety and security protocols will be implemented, and referrals to appropriate community services will be provided as options to workers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>GentryWood warns\u00a0that stalking should not be taken lightly because it is often associated with\u00a0domestic violence cases that ended in death. But she says\u00a0businesses want to help and are often relieved to have resources to offer to their employees.\u00a0In New Mexico,\u00a0the\u00a0DVRC can advise managers and business owners on legal\u00a0obligations to victims, such as providing mandatory time off for court dates.\u00a0And she says there are specific strategies that\u00a0an employer\u00a0can implement to address stalking at work, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>having another person record the voicemail on the victim\u2019s work desk phone<\/li>\n<li>moving the victim to a different desk or station<\/li>\n<li>varying hours at work, including start times<\/li>\n<li>encouraging\u00a0a victim to take\u00a0different routes to the\u00a0workplace and\u00a0park in different places<\/li>\n<li>asking \u00a0security to walk the employee to their car<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The DVRC serves over 2000 clients on average each year through services like\u00a0counseling, legal advocacy, parenting classes, safe housing referrals and empowerment workshops.\u00a0The organization is part of the The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cabq.gov\/police\/albuquerque-family-advocacy-center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Family Advocacy Center<\/a>, a coalition of service organizations that are housed in the same building downtown.<\/p>\n<p>GentryWood says many people may not know that victims of domestic violence often \u00a0go through several cycles of violence before deciding to leave. \u201cOn average, a victim is assaulted six times a year, and they are severely injured 12 times before they leave the relationship,&#8221; she says. But when the victim is ready for help, advocates with the\u00a0DVRC are able to provide immediate\u00a0support, even if they are not Albuquerque residents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe never turn anyone away,&#8221; says GentryWood, &#8220;We are not telling the victim what to do; we are giving them options.
