{"id":6721,"date":"2015-09-23T14:07:24","date_gmt":"2015-09-23T21:07:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newmexicopbs.org\/productions\/newmexicoinfocus\/?p=6721"},"modified":"2020-06-02T10:05:24","modified_gmt":"2020-06-02T17:05:24","slug":"birth-options-for-young-moms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newmexicopbs.org\/productions\/newmexicoinfocus\/birth-options-for-young-moms\/","title":{"rendered":"Birth Options For Young Moms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Amanda Nezzie<\/p>\n<p>This week on<em>\u00a0New Mexico in Focus<\/em>, \u00a0we devote the full hour to coverage of teen pregnancy and young parenthood in our state.\u00a0New Mexico has one of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/ash\/oah\/adolescent-health-topics\/reproductive-health\/states\/nm.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/ash\/oah\/adolescent-health-topics\/reproductive-health\/states\/nm.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">highest teen birth rates<\/a>\u00a0in the nation, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services.<\/p>\n<p>All mothers have\u00a0\u00a0many choices when it comes to birthing methods and care during birth and after a pregnancy.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Nightingale-Midwifery-Clinic-294489203913808\/timeline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nandi Andrea Hill<\/a> is a certified professional midwife licensed in New Mexico. \u201cI\u2019m not here to manage&#8221; she says, &#8220;but to give the best care for the entire experience of pregnancy.\u201d During\u00a0hour-long visits each month during pregnancy, Hill says has\u00a0\u201ctrust, bond, and support once the birth comes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Hill,\u00a0many of the\u00a0teens she has worked with\u00a0went online to find support and\u00a0\u00a0asked\u00a0good questions.\u00a0Hill currently is partnering with UNMH to work with women of color in the \u201cYoung Mother\u2019s Centering Pregnancy Program.\u201d The program receives support from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oaaa.state.nm.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Mexico\u00a0Office of African American Affairs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Susan Simon, a certified nurse-midwife with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lovelace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lovelace Health System<\/a>, says a teen mom\u2019s birth choices for a low-risk pregnancy could be everything from a natural childbirth to an epidural in a hospital. \u00a0Simon says, &#8220;we try to make it unbiased as possible and to honor her wishes, as long as it\u2019s safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Simon describes her role as \u201cmentoring in labor.\u201d She\u00a0works alongside labor and delivery nurses and staff to support the mom during delivery.\u00a0Pregnant women are routinely asked questions from their health care providers about their home-life situation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Do you have reliable transportation?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Do you have enough food at home?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Do you feel physically safe at home?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Teen moms are no different, and staff social workers can\u00a0offer information about resources.\u00a0Simon says teen moms can sign up for the federal\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fns.usda.gov\/wic\/women-infants-and-children-wic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Women, Infants, and Children Program<\/a> (WIC) to get\u00a0\u00a0in-depth education, nutrition information, access to food vouchers and formula.\u00a0 Lovelace has a lactation program and partners with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.llli.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">La Leche League<\/a> and midwives who can\u00a0work with moms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo build trust with our moms, we grant her autonomy. We recognize this is someone who has the capacity to make her own decisions.
