Because the University of New Mexico holds part of our license, NMPBS turns into a ghost town the last couple\u00a0weeks\u00a0of each year. That means gentle breezes and tumbleweeds for New Mexico in Focus, too.\u00a0

And so,\u00a0this\u00a0week\u2019s\u00a0will be our last \u201cnew\u201d episode of 2025. It’ll be the last edition of this newsletter, too.\u00a0

We lead off the show with an important discussion about river restoration and stewardship, led by correspondent Elizabeth Miller. Elizabeth and I have worked together on and off for several years at different news organizations, and\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0delighted she agreed in 2025 to try her hand\u00a0at\u00a0television.\u00a0\u00a0

She was a natural fit.\u00a0

From pieces out in the field about New Mexico Search and Rescue to replanting efforts in the Hermits Peak\/Calf Canyon burn scar to\u00a0the drying Rio Grande, Elizabeth\u2019s work has helped us stay focused on environmental issues affecting the state after the departure of Our Land Senior Producer Laura Paskus in January.\u00a0\u00a0

This week, Elizabeth is in the studio with a pair of experts to talk about the importance of the New Mexico Environment Department\u2019s request for\u00a0a massive funding increase to care for our rivers.\u00a0

NMiF\u00a0Senior Producer Lou DiVizio has a pair of interviews for this episode, too: one with\u00a0Albuquerque Journal\u00a0sportswriter Sean Reider about the hefty new contract extension for UNM football coach Jason Eck, and another with a group of UNM student filmmakers, who explored the unexpected world of vegan\u00a0cuisine within Mexican and Mexican American communities. (You can watch\u00a0their\u00a0lovely five-minute film<\/a>\u00a0on YouTube.)\u00a0

And Host Nash Jones sits down with a group of familiar faces \u2014 to us, anyway \u2014 to learn about\u00a0their\u00a0first-of-its-kind effort<\/a>\u00a0to reveal where\u00a0New Mexico news organizations are, where\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0not, and what audiences want from them.\u00a0\u00a0

And there you have it \u2014 after a long 2025, Team\u00a0NMiF\u00a0is taking a break. But that\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0mean\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0going off the air.\u00a0

Next week,\u00a0we\u2019ll\u00a0show you some of our favorite stories from this year told outside the studio.\u00a0You\u2019ll\u00a0see a couple pieces\u00a0from Elizabeth, one from Nash and three from\u00a0NMiF\u00a0Reporter Cailley Chella, who joined our team in the summer and has already made\u00a0a huge impact\u00a0for viewers.\u00a0\u00a0

And on Jan. 2,\u00a0we\u2019ll run back through some of the biggest stories we covered in 2025:\u00a0the end of the decade-long, court-mandated reform at the Albuquerque Police Department;\u00a0a glimpse at\u00a0President Trump\u2019s impact on New Mexico, including funding cuts to public radio and television stations; and high-profile mayoral elections in Albuquerque and Santa Fe.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
