If you subscribe\u00a0to this newsletter,\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0aware by now that Tim Keller routed Darren White 58-42 in his bid for an unprecedented third consecutive term as Albuquerque\u00a0mayor this week. We spent about half of this week\u2019s episode of New Mexico in Focus analyzing the race \u2014 and\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0ahead for Keller with a\u00a0new-look City Council as he eyes the next four years.\u00a0

I\u2019m\u00a0using this space for a little note about\u00a0how\u00a0we put that analysis together.\u00a0

When I started in New Mexico journalism more than 20 years ago, Eric Griego and Greg Payne were on the council. The\u00a0differences between them couldn’t have been\u00a0starker. Griego was a Democrat, Payne was a Republican, and that was just the headline. It was at the first council meeting I ever covered\u00a0that the two\u00a0nearly came to\u00a0blows\u00a0over a proposed indoor smoking ban.\u00a0

What an introduction to Albuquerque politics.\u00a0

In the decades since, Griego has left the Democratic party, and Payne is no longer a Republican. Like me,\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0both\u00a0independents\u00a0now, and I figured they\u2019d\u00a0be the perfect pair of guests for this week\u2019s election postmortem. I was right.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than rehash the conversation NMiF\u00a0Host Nash Jones guided Griego and Payne through,\u00a0I\u2019ll just encourage you to watch the two segments \u2014 one<\/a>\u00a0diving into how Keller, a deeply unpopular mayor, managed to run away with this election, and\u00a0the other<\/a> looking ahead to what\u2019s next for Albuquerque in 2026 and beyond.\u00a0
