(Photo by Austin Fisher \/ Source NM)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Initial judgments in lawsuits against the Trump administration have restored billions in federal funding for New Mexico government and some nonprofits, attorneys with the New Mexico Department of Justice told lawmakers Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The New Mexico Department of Justice is part of 25 outstanding multi-state lawsuits against the Trump administration over funding cuts, as well as alleged federal overreach in executive orders on <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcenm.com\/briefs\/new-mexico-joins-voting-restrictions-lawsuit-against-trump-administration\/\">election administration<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcenm.com\/2025\/01\/21\/repub\/flurry-of-legal-challenges-immediately-mounted-to-trump-birthright-citizenship-order\/\">stripping birthright citizenship<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attorney General Ra\u00fal Torrez joined other Democratic attorneys general in March town hall in Phoenix, speaking to the litigation strategy a Democratic AG coalition has deployed against the Trump administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSince January of 2025, much of the Impact Litigation Division\u2019s work has focused on protecting the interests of the State of New Mexico and our residents against federal funding cuts and agency reorganizations that have or would have impaired our state government\u2019s ability to serve our population,\u201d Anjana Samant, deputy counsel for <a href=\"https:\/\/nmdoj.gov\/about-the-office\/impact-litigation\/\">impact litigation at NMDOJ<\/a>, told the New Mexico Legislature\u2019s interim Federal Funding Stabilization Subcommittee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Judges have granted temporary wins to the state, often restoring cut funds in several of the suits. This included $12 billion dollars in federal grants and loans already promised to New Mexico <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcenm.com\/2025\/01\/28\/repub\/trump-administration-memo-announces-abrupt-freeze-on-broad-swath-of-federal-payments\/\">frozen by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget<\/a>; just over $50 million for the state\u2019s education department across <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcenm.com\/2025\/07\/14\/trump-administration-withholding-612m-in-education-funding-from-new-mexico\/\">several<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcenm.com\/2025\/07\/16\/new-mexico-joins-22-other-states-in-lawsuit-over-education-funding-freeze\/\">different<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kunm.org\/kunm-news-update\/2025-07-31\/thurs-new-mexico-schools-still-waiting-for-restored-federal-funding-more\">lawsuits<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcenm.com\/2025\/04\/01\/new-mexico-joins-22-states-suing-over-trump-budget-cuts\/\">$59 million for pandemic-era public health funding<\/a> stripped out of New Mexico Department of Health and Health Care Authority budgets; and $18 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation for <a href=\"https:\/\/sourcenm.com\/2025\/05\/13\/20-state-ags-sue-feds-for-tying-transportation-and-disaster-funding-to-immigration-enforcement\/\">electric vehicle infrastructure<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Samant noted that the division, beyond its lawsuits against the federal government, also pursued litigation against social media owners <a href=\"https:\/\/nmdoj.gov\/press-release\/attorney-general-raul-torrez-files-lawsuit-against-meta-platforms-and-mark-zuckerberg-to-protect-children-from-sexual-abuse-and-human-trafficking\/\">Meta<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/snap-sued-by-new-mexico-over-failure-protect-children-sexual-exploitation-2024-09-05\/\">Snap Inc<\/a>, which owns Snapchat alleging the company\u2019s policies fail to protect children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Samant requested lawmakers provide $3.2 million in additional funding in the 2026 session to hire more staff.\u201cTo say that we are at capacity is an understatement,\u201d Samant said of the division\u2019s five attorneys. \u201cWe want to continue to do the amazing work that we are doing, but we also want to expand our impact.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen.
