(That conversation aired in two parts, <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.knme.org\/video\/arturo-sandoval-on-earth-day-in-1970-and-the-decades-since-upvcqn\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cArturo Sandoval on Earth Day in 1970 \u2014 and the decades since\u201d<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.knme.org\/video\/at-the-end-of-the-day-were-on-this-ship-together-atsqmm\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201c&#8217;At the end of the day, we&#8217;re on this ship together.&#8217;\u201d<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/portal.knme.org\/video\/dont-agonize-organize-25ddyp\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Now he\u2019s back<\/a>, talking about how to protect the environmental laws Congress passed in that era. These are laws that corporations and some politicians conspired to weaken and dismantle for decades, but they\u2019ll face unprecedented challenges in the second Trump term, especially given the makeup of the U.S. Supreme Court and the incoming U.S. Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sandoval acknowledged that New Mexicans will suffer in the Trump administration. But he\u2019s not despondent.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSomebody asked me \u2018What are you going to do as a result of this election?\u2019 I said, \u2018I\u2019m not going to agonize, I\u2019m going to organize,\u2019\u201d Sandoval told me. \u201cI think that&#8217;s the rallying call: that we need to keep doing what we&#8217;re doing, positively to build community, but we need to do it with much more intention. We have to really reach out to other groups and organizations and neighbors to continue to build the positive things we can do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"pbs-viral-player-wrapper\" style=\"position: relative; padding-top: calc(56.25% + 43px);\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/player.pbs.org\/viralplayer\/3096649555\/\" allowfullscreen allow=\"encrypted-media\" style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; border: 0;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s no surprise that the list of President-elect Trump\u2019s nominees is full of men and women who support gutting protective laws and dismantling government institutions meant to serve people and protect the environment. There are also some prominent public critics of vaccinations, like Robert Kennedy, Jr. and Marty Makary. It shouldn\u2019t be surprising, of course, that people who promote doubt in the importance of vaccines share company with those who have spent decades disinforming Americans that clean air and safe drinking water harm economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vaccines, like environmental regulations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/future-perfect\/386215\/trump-rfk-jr-vaccines-health-measles-chart\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">work for the good of everyone<\/a>. And just as no one can slap a fence around their yard and protect their family from pollutants like PFAS, it\u2019s impossible to \u201cself-care\u201d your way out of a polio epidemic or measles outbreak.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s so much talk about the impact of social media on young people, but adults are addicted to their own algorithms, too. Don\u2019t fall prey to disinformation (whether it\u2019s about vaccinations or the environment or anything else). It\u2019s easy to be media literate, just by considering a few questions whenever you see something online:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Who made this? Check for a byline and a media outlet, or a company or NGO.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why did someone make this? It\u2019s called <em>Water Bodies: Love Letters to the Most Abundant Substance on Earth<\/em> and features contributions from writers including Michelle Otero, Dr. K. Maria Lane, Sarah Gilman, Daniel Rothberg, Luke Runyon, Chris La Tray, and more. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kunm.org\/local-news\/2024-09-30\/new-book-explores-the-intimate-connection-between-water-and-humans\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">And a huge thanks to KUNM\u2019s Bryce Dix, who talked to me about the book earlier this fall.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, I want to pay my respects to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.santafenewmexican.com\/news\/local_news\/former-senator-unm-professor-remembered-as-advocate-for-native-rights-liberal-causes\/article_390b32d8-a9d4-11ef-8159-9f0e594c2664.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">former U.S. Senator Fred Harris, who died over the weekend<\/a>. I had long admired Harris\u2019s work (and fiery spirit!) and was honored ten years ago when he contacted me to write about environmental issues for a book he was editing, <em>New Mexico 2050<\/em>. \u201cThis is an honest book,\u201d Harris wrote in its preface.
