According to the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District, the river may dry soon. Are Homicide Charges Next?\u201d<\/a> (Karen Zraick, <em>The New York Times<\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2024\/09\/16\/richard-powers-profile\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cRichard Powers on what we do to the Earth and what it does to us\u201d<\/a> (Hua Hsu, <em>The New Yorker<\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/searchlightnm.org\/elemental-questions\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">At Searchlight New Mexico, Alicia Inez Guzm\u00e1n follows up<\/a> on her August story about 80-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/searchlightnm.org\/a-nuclear-legacy-in-los-alamos\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plutonium contamination in Los Alamos\u2019s Acid Canyon<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As she notes in <a href=\"https:\/\/searchlightnm.org\/elemental-questions\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cElemental questions,\u201d<\/a> after the publication of her story in August, LANL released op-eds from director Thom Mason, criticizing media coverage of the study showing continued contamination in Acid Canyon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her new piece, Guzm\u00e1n notes that while she was reporting on the study, a LANL spokesperson declined to answer questions. And, she adds in her new story: \u201cThe lab declined Searchlight\u2019s request to interview Mason for this article. The Environmental Protection Agency did not respond to Searchlight\u2019s questions about its remediation levels and how its regulations apply to LANL.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An analysis about the power dynamics at play when it comes to the northern New Mexico nuclear weapons laboratory could span years&#8217; worth of seminars and conferences. Suffice it to say, a few of those discussions could focus on the lab\u2019s common practice of ignoring, delaying, and declining interview requests \u2014 and then framing media coverage of the lab as deliberately lacking substance, facts, or perspective. As always, I appreciate Guzm\u00e1n\u2019s work, and her transparency about the challenges of reporting on the lab.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Check out this guide from Bernalillo County, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bernco.gov\/public-works\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/76\/2023\/09\/Passive-Rainwater-Harvesting-Field-Guide_FINAL_REDUCED.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cField Guide for Passive Rainwater Harvesting.\u201d<\/a> There are lots of great ideas and techniques, for no matter where in New Mexico you live.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lastly, if you live near Cannon Air Force Base and draw your drinking water from a private well, the New Mexico Environment Department is offering free testing for PFAS.<\/strong> As you\u2019ll recall, in 2018, the state learned that the <a href=\"https:\/\/nmpoliticalreport.com\/featured\/cannon-afb-water-contamination-on-tap-in-friday-night-meeting\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Air Force had contaminated local waters with PFAS from its firefighting foams.<\/a> The Air Force has yet to clean up or contain the plume from spreading, and according to a press release, the state is doing this new testing because the Air Force has neglected to do it \u2014 or deliver promised filtration systems to residents. From the state:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe testing is available to anyone who lives in areas around Cannon AFB on a first come, first serve basis to 150 households. Depending on the response, NMED may expand the initiative.
