But I didn\u2019t want to take a break without pointing you toward last week&#8217;s conversation with Dr. K. Maria Lane about her new book, <a href=\"https:\/\/press.uchicago.edu\/ucp\/books\/book\/chicago\/F\/bo215862270.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fluid Geographies: Water, Science, and Settler Colonialism in New Mexico<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lane is Dean of Graduate Studies and Professor of Geography &amp; Environmental Studies at the University of New Mexico. She&#8217;s also founding director of the R.H. Mallory Center for Community Geography and was named in 2023 as a UNM Presidential Teaching Fellow. And her latest book, looking at the Territorial Period in New Mexico water history, is timely and important.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Talking Water Management with \u2018Fluid Geographies\u2019 Author\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/953hn5tatZQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStarting in the late 1800\u2019s and then getting up to the point where my book really focuses \u2014 the turn of the century and leading up until Statehood \u2014 water management became a tool of taking territory; and taking not just territory, but control of decision-making over resources,\u201d Lane said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We talked about the analysis in her book, which is based on historical documents and almost 200 court cases involving water \u2014 court cases in which judges (like state officials) repeatedly valued the knowledge and expertise of Anglos over people who had lived here for generations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe unbelievable thing that&#8217;s unrecognized&#8230;at least in this time and in the historical record, is that you have land-based people living in this region with generations and generations and generations of knowledge passed down about environmental conditions, environmental change, water flow, water use, water management \u2014 and they&#8217;re no longer \u2018experts\u2019 because the new experts have to have degrees in hydrology or degrees in forestry or degrees in math or whatever,\u201d Lane said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She noted that in a report to the Governor, the first Territorial Irrigation Engineer (the precursor to the New Mexico State Engineer) wrote about Anglo transplants from the East wasting water and not understanding the arid landscape: \u201cThey were writing about how ignorant people were <em>and<\/em> saying White people alone had the expertise to manage water, which was just how people understood things at that time \u2014 without really addressing the racism that lays behind it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>And if you haven\u2019t read it already, check out Alicia Inez Guzm\u00e1n\u2019s latest story,<\/strong> about plutonium contamination from the early 1940s that persists in Los Alamos\u2019s Acid Canyon and continues to move downstream.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s an excerpt from her story, <a href=\"https:\/\/searchlightnm.org\/a-nuclear-legacy-in-los-alamos\/?utm_source=Searchlight+New+Mexico&amp;utm_campaign=bb4da68d48-7%2F18%2F2024+%E2%80%93+Life%2C+death+or+deportation_COPY_01&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_8e05fb0467-bb4da68d48-395606875&amp;mc_cid=bb4da68d48&amp;mc_eid=1112990d58\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cA nuclear legacy in Los Alamos: After three cleanups, independent analysis shows 80-year-old plutonium persists in Acid Canyon and beyond\u201d<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUsing a technology called mass spectrometry, [Michael] Ketterer said this scenario became apparent after he found that several samples from scattered sites in Acid Canyon \u2014 whose trailhead is tucked behind the Los Alamos County Aquatic Center \u2014 had the same fingerprint, one that dated to the earliest days of the Manhattan Project. He realized just how far that plutonium had traveled when he also collected the identical fingerprint in Los Alamos Canyon, some 12 miles southeast of Acid Canyon, near the Phillips 66 gas station in Totavi \u2014 washed downhill by monsoon rains.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And with that, I\u2019ll be back in September.
