Certainly not.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it\u2019s one small way for reporters to spend time with people without expecting anything in return. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C9nOjpIPvRK\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">And there\u2019s something wonderful about just eating together, laughing, meeting family members, and enjoying a beautiful day together.<\/a> (And since it rained in the afternoon, we also witnessed firsthand how post-fire flooding is still a problem, two years after the Hermits Peak Calf Canyon Fire.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a time when more and more reporters and news outlets lack the funding and resources to meet with people in person \u2014 or see changing landscapes firsthand \u2014 I\u2019m thankful to PBS for funding a project that allowed us to make a thoughtful broadcast program, re-visit with some of our friends in the state, and even create middle school lesson plans from the content we created. <a href=\"https:\/\/nm.pbslearningmedia.org\/collection\/our-land-collection\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stay tuned for those, which we\u2019ll be releasing on PBS LearningMedia later this month.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I\u2019m bummed to say goodbye to John Britt, who recently left NMPBS. Golf courses and a country club top the list\u201d <\/a>(Elizabeth McCall, City Desk Abq)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kunm.org\/local-news\/2024-07-15\/top-american-election-concerns-include-environment-reproductive-right-and-more\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cTop American election concerns include environment, reproductive right, and more\u201d<\/a> (Stephanie Riviera, KUNM)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>On Monday, I spoke before the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/committee\/Interim_Committee?CommitteeCode=WNR\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Mexico State Legislature\u2019s Water and Natural Resources Committee<\/a>. As I prepped for that short presentation, I thought of a hundred things I wanted to convey to legislators within my 15-minute time frame.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the issues had to leave off the list is my concern about the loss of local newspapers and community news outlets \u2014 and how that lack of on-the-ground coverage by people who live within a community affects environmental awareness, action, and protections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As luck would have it \u2014\u2013 since lots of other people are worried about this, too \u2014 there&#8217;s a great piece in <em>Audubon Magazine<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.audubon.org\/magazine\/local-journalism-crisis-bad-news-planet\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Local Journalism Crisis Is Bad News for the Planet.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My friend Meaghan Parker hits the point exactly: \u201cThere is no more local story than the environment,\u201d Parker says in the story; she\u2019s the former executive director for the Society of Environmental Journalists. \u201cIt is the air we breathe. It\u2019s the food we eat. It\u2019s the water we drink.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully, in New Mexico, there are a bunch of great journalists covering the environment, but it\u2019s sad to know that we\u2019ve lost robust local reporting from communities like Ruidoso, Raton, Los Alamos, Alamogordo and even Carlsbad and Las Cruces as newspapers are shuttered or starved.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, I love personal maps and paper maps, and all kinds of non-electronic maps, so I appreciated the presentation of this piece by Ben Buckland, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/07\/17\/travel\/switzerland-local-maps.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cTrekking Across Switzerland, Guided by Locals\u2019 Hand-Drawn Maps.\u201d&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>P.S.
