It\u2019s that time of year. The sandhill cranes are starting to kettle up and head north. I\u2019ll miss their graceful (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C3QdoXePAL-\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">and noisy<\/a>) presence around the Middle Rio Grande Valley. It\u2019s almost time, too, for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C3Q9PcVveRn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">giant crow mob<\/a> that winters in the bosque along the Rio Grande to move along. Those crows are less appreciated (by the owls as well as many of the humans), but I\u2019ve come to love their presence, especially when they stream south over my house just after sunrise.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>And now on to business.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Climate change is here. And it&#8217;s affecting our lives in ways we might not realize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"pbs-viral-player-wrapper\" style=\"position: relative; padding-top: calc(56.25% + 43px);\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/player.pbs.org\/viralplayer\/3088453730\/\" allowfullscreen allow=\"encrypted-media\" style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; border: 0;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/projectecho.unm.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Project ECHO at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center<\/a> began a climate program with web-based trainings on health care decarbonizing, climate justice, and health equity.&nbsp;Dr. Joanna Katzman directs Project ECHO\u2019s Public Health Initiatives, and she came on the show last week to talk about training health care professionals to recognize how climate change affects patient health. One example we talked about? Heat waves.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople who live in urban areas are more affected by extreme heat and so if you&#8217;re working in these cities or if you&#8217;re homeless or if you&#8217;re a vulnerable patient\u2014someone who might have a substance use disorder or if you don&#8217;t have air conditioning or if you&#8217;re impoverished\u2014you might be much more susceptible to extreme heat,\u201d Katzman said during our conversation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we have these long days and weeks of hot temperatures, it would be really nice if New Mexico could put out more public service announcements about prolonged heat waves, and prolonged impacts. We also know that violence in the community increases in the summer months and heat certainly exacerbates this. This has been studied over and over again in many peer-reviewed journals. So it&#8217;s the falling of the temperature at night that is really protective.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Katzman\u2019s conversation\u2014and her work\u2014is proactive. She\u2019s not talking about gloom and doom. And the training she facilitates through Project ECHO is focused on individual and collective action. \u201cThere is hope,\u201d she says. \u201cThere are so many things we can do together.\u201d And, I\u2019ve linked additional information at the end of this message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Last week, while I was prepping for a radio interview, I pulled together a bunch of resources on fire season, snowpack, water forecasts, and climate.
