(You\u2019ve heard a lot about \u201cplutonium pit production.\u201d Plutonium pits are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/nnsa\/plutonium-pit-production\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bowling ball-sized<\/a> hollow spheres that <a href=\"https:\/\/discover.lanl.gov\/publications\/national-security-science\/2021-winter\/pit-production-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trigger nuclear explosives inside a warhead or bomb<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If built, the new transmission line will need a new, 100-foot-wide utility corridor on lands managed by the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/nepa\/articles\/doeea-2199-draft-environmental-assessment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The NNSA\u2019s draft environmental assessment<\/a> includes a few maps, like the one below, of the proposed transmission line\u2019s route from PNM\u2019s Norton Substation (the green square on BLM land) across White Rock Canyon to LANL\u2019s switching station (the green square on DOE land).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re interested in seeing where the 70-foot-tall powerline will cross the Rio Grande, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C04ihWOg_2_\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">I had posted some footage on our Instagram account last month.<\/a> (At the time, I was just gawking at some old footage of the river there and thinking about Cochiti Dam; but you should go look at that beautiful canyon.) But facing pushback from LANL backers and a lack of buy-in from Mayor Alan Webber, she says she will stall the proposal before its first scheduled committee hearing this week.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SFR\u2019s Chandler quotes Cassutt saying: \u201cObviously, the economic development impact of LANL for our community and for Northern New Mexico is huge. I think what\u2019s really important for me is that I am not of the mindset of \u2018LANL is this awful, terrible, evil organization.\u2019 They do a lot of wonderful work. They have a lot of employees that are wonderful members of our community, and so for me just really\u2026having a better picture of it all is important for me before I\u2019m able to carry legislation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of this reminds me of N. And F2754, the female wolf who has twice dispersed from her pack to travel northward on her own, was captured in early December. But over the holiday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/vall\/learn\/news\/2023-20.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the National Park Service shared a photo of her that Bryan Ramsay snapped in the Valle Grande<\/a>. According to NPS, the last documented Mexican wolf sighting in Valles Caldera was in 1932.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if you\u2019re still thinking about N. Scott Momaday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/7957\/the-art-of-poetry-no-112-n-scott-momaday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">read this 2022 interview with him in <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/7957\/the-art-of-poetry-no-112-n-scott-momaday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Paris Review<\/a>. The photos are great, especially the one in San Ysidro around 1950.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although I didn\u2019t know him personally, I admired Klee Benally and was sad to learn that he died recently. You can read more about his life in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/07\/us\/klee-benally-dead.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The New York Times<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/07\/us\/klee-benally-dead.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> obituary that was published Sunday<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lastly, just a note about the next twelve months. In the coming year on Our Land, you\u2019ll hear a lot about climate change and other environmental and moral issues. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/portal.knme.org\/show\/our-land-new-mexicos-environmental-past-present-and-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">For seven seasons at NMPBS,<\/a> I\u2019ve covered the science of climate change; the physical impacts of warming on our forests and rivers and communities; and the connection between greenhouse gas emissions and the increasing likelihood that tomorrow\u2019s New Mexicans will face far greater challenges than we can imagine today.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll keep reporting on all those issues. But this year, the show will also focus on moral questions, including adaptation within and to a changing world\u2014and how communities learn from and lift one another in the absence of action and commitment from politicians, lawmakers, governments, industries, and businesses. As with say, nuclear weapons production, there are too few public conversations in New Mexico around climate change and specifically, around the morality of letting the world burn\u2014while knowing how to douse the fires.
