In the second, we focused on <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.knme.org\/video\/new-fire-protocols-n5yjti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new and changing protocols for prescribed fire<\/a>. And in the third, I asked the three officials about <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.knme.org\/video\/building-public-trust-in-the-forest-service-cktxpe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">taking responsibility and building trust<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Toward the bottom of the newsletter, I\u2019ve included links to reports, news stories, and resources mentioned during those conversations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sunday was <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/worldriversday.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Rivers Day<\/a>\u2014and I spent the afternoon hiking up the channel of the Rio Grande in Albuquerque. (Yes, you read that right, \u201chiking up the channel&#8230;\u201d)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve included some photos over on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/our_land_nm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Our Land Instagram page<\/a>. It\u2019s hard to accurately convey what\u2019s happening in the river with iPhone photos. To give you some perspective, however, I stopped by one of the spots where we filmed parts of our <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.knme.org\/video\/albuquerques-bosque-in-autumn-fnnjwo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2020 love letter to the bosque<\/a>. They pleaded with major emitting nations to do more.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Those nations remained silent. They weren\u2019t allowed to speak because, organizers said, they had no new actions to take.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The only countries that touted their efforts \u2014 \u201cfirst movers and doers,\u201d the United Nations called them \u2014 were responsible for just one-ninth of the world\u2019s annual carbon pollution.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cHumanity has opened the gates of hell,\u201d U.N. Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres said Wednesday, opening a special climate ambition summit with yet another plea for action. \u201cHorrendous heat is having horrendous effects. Distraught farmers watching crops carried away by floods. Sweltering temperatures spawning disease. And thousands fleeing in fear as historic fires rage.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/sg\/speeches\/2023-09-20\/secretary-generals-opening-remarks-the-climate-ambition-summit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Guterres\u2019s entire opening statement on the United Nations website<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/sg\/speeches\/2023-09-20\/secretary-generals-closing-remarks-the-climate-ambition-summit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In his closing statement<\/a>, Guterres tried to offer words of hope and optimism, and ended by addressing the countries, cities, regions, companies, and financial institutions that are \u201caligning their policies, their strategies, their investments with the 1.5 degrees limit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To all the \u201cfirst-doers,\u201d he said, \u201cScale up. Bring together all those that you can bring together with you. Go for it. Some New Mexico providers have reported delays in vaccine deliveries, so if you can\u2019t find an appointment immediately, please be patient. Those interested in accessing their vaccine history can do so at <a href=\"https:\/\/nmsiis.health.state.nm.us\/webiznet_nm_public\/Application\/PublicPortal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">VaxViewNM.org<\/a>. Support for login issues is available through the NMSIIS Help Desk at 833-882-6454.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>COVID-19 vaccines remain readily accessible at no cost through private health insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid.
