And on Sunday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/30\/opinion\/international-world\/oppenheimer-nuclear-bomb-cancer.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&amp;referringSource=articleShare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The New York Times<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/30\/opinion\/international-world\/oppenheimer-nuclear-bomb-cancer.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&amp;referringSource=articleShare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> published a guest essay<\/a> from Cordova, in which she writes:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This July has been more tense than usual, as our community waited for the release of \u201cOppenheimer\u201d \u2014 and some recognition of what we have endured over the last 78 years. When I watched the film at a packed screening in Santa Fe, I saw that wasn\u2019t to be. The three-hour movie tells only part of the story of the Manhattan Project, which developed the bomb, and conducted the test code-named Trinity that day in July. It does not explore in any depth the costs of deciding to test the bomb in a place where my family and many others had lived for generations.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Coming up this Friday, we\u2019ll air a conversation with Adrian Oglesby,<\/strong> director of the Utton Transboundary Resources Center at the UNM School of Law. Since he\u2019s probably one of the few water attorneys in the state not involved in the U.S. Supreme Court litigation between Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado over the waters of the Rio Grande, he could come into the studio and help navigate that lawsuit and its possible resolution. You can read <a href=\"https:\/\/grist.org\/climate\/july-has-been-the-hottest-month-in-humanitys-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lyric Aquino\u2019s story about this at Grist<\/a>. Or <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.copernicus.eu\/july-2023-sees-multiple-global-temperature-records-broken\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">read the joint report<\/a> from the World Meteorological Organization, the Copernicus Climate Change Service, and Leipzig University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This week, New Mexico Voices for Children released a policy brief about the impact of climate change (including extreme heat) on children\u2019s health. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmvoices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Climate-Change-and-Childrens-Health-Report_web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">You can read that policy brief online<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I\u2019m sure you\u2019ve also seen the headlines about the projected collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation or AMOC. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2023\/07\/25\/atlantic-ocean-amoc-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Washington Post<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2023\/07\/25\/atlantic-ocean-amoc-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u2019s Sarah Kaplan<\/a> has a useful explanation of AMOC in her story about the newly published study:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Scientists have long seen the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, or <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/facts\/amoc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AMOC<\/a><em>, as one of the planet\u2019s most vulnerable <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pik-potsdam.de\/en\/output\/infodesk\/tipping-elements\/tipping-elements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201ctipping elements\u201d<\/a><em> \u2014 meaning the system could undergo an abrupt and irreversible change, with dramatic consequences for the rest of the globe. Under Earth\u2019s current climate, this aquatic conveyor belt transports warm, salty water from the tropics to the North Atlantic, and then sends colder water back south along the ocean floor. But as rising global temperatures <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2023\/06\/06\/arctic-sea-ice-melting\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">melt Arctic ice<\/a><em>, the resulting influx of cold freshwater has thrown a wrench in the system \u2014 and could shut it down entirely.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the abstract of their study, Peter and Susanne Ditlevsen write, \u201cWe estimate a collapse of the AMOC to occur around mid-century under the current scenario of future emissions.\u201d You can also read the study for yourself:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-023-39810-w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cWarning of a forthcoming collapse of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation\u201d<\/a> (Peter Ditlevsen and Susanne Ditlevesen, <em>Nature Communications<\/em>)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then there\u2019s last week\u2019s record-breaking temperatures in the oceans. Again, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/weather\/2023\/07\/28\/ocean-temperature-maps-heat-records\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Washington Post<\/a> does a great job contextualizing what\u2019s happening. Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/weather\/2023\/07\/28\/ocean-temperature-maps-heat-records\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cOcean Temperatures are off the charts. Here\u2019s where they\u2019re highest,\u201d<\/a> by Tim Meko and Dan Stillman. And make sure you\u2019re reading the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/environment\/2023\/07\/25\/coral-florida-keys-water-temperature-manatee-bay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">work of <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/environment\/2023\/07\/25\/coral-florida-keys-water-temperature-manatee-bay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tampa Bay Times<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/environment\/2023\/07\/25\/coral-florida-keys-water-temperature-manatee-bay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> reporter Max Chesnes<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking of local reporters, you should always be reading Tony Davis, who just had a story over the weekend at the <a href=\"https:\/\/tucson.com\/news\/local\/subscriber\/arizona-environment-heat-saguaros\/article_e7d0f476-2cf6-11ee-a53a-576d67ebb1f5.html?utm_source=tucson.com&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=top5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arizona Daily Star<\/a> about how saguaros are suffering and dying due to heat waves in southern Arizona.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/29\/world\/middleeast\/iraq-water-crisis-desertification.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&amp;referringSource=articleShare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The New York Times<\/a> had a staggering feature (best viewed on your phone, in my opinion) about the impacts of climate change on the Fertile Crescent. I\u2019d hoped the story would acknowledge the role of U.S. military action in Iraq or at least<a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/environment\/2022\/10\/pentagon-climate-change-neta-crawford-book\/#:~:text=The%20US%20military%20is%20the,the%20emissions%20of%20most%20countries.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> the role that the Pentagon plays in accelerating climate change<\/a>. Plant sequoias.\u00a0<br>Say that your main crop is the forest\u00a0<br>that you did not plant,\u00a0<br>that you will not live to harvest.<br>Say that the leaves are harvested<br>when they have rotted into the mold.<br>Call that profit. Prophesy such returns.<br>Put your faith in the two inches of humus<br>that will build under the trees<br>every thousand years.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks for reading, friends.
