That\u2019s it. It\u2019s over. For now. The Governor has the ability to call legislators back to the capitol to tackle particular topics in special sessions. If we hear anything about that you\u2019ll get the message on KUNM and from our media partner New Mexico PBS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On this #YNMG we\u2019re dedicating the entire episode to one piece of legislation that is now on Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham\u2019s desk&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmhealth.org\/news\/awareness\/2022\/2\/?view=1817\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">waiting for her signature<\/a>. House Bill 52 is an amendment to the Harm Reduction Act. Overdoses from Fentanyl are the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.boisestatepublicradio.org\/health\/2021-08-24\/fentanyl-in-the-mountain-west-and-death-toll-is-rising\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">top killer of young adults<\/a>&nbsp;in New Mexico, but&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/Legislation\/Legislation?chamber=H&amp;legType=B&amp;legNo=52&amp;year=22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HB52<\/a>&nbsp;will give drug users a new tool that will make them a little safer \u2013&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/12\/01\/health\/fentanyl-test-strip\/index.html?utm_source=Santa+Fe+Reporter+List&amp;utm_campaign=f7a70d2e91-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_10_06_12_41_COPY_01&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_b77a98714b-f7a70d2e91-60696167&amp;mc_cid=f7a70d2e91&amp;mc_eid=938486a593\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fentanyl test strips<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re not talking to a journalist for this episode. Instead we have Aryan Showers, the Policy Director for New Mexico\u2019s Department of Health, and a champion of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/harmreduction.org\/about-us\/principles-of-harm-reduction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">harm reduction<\/a>&nbsp;strategies for combating addiction. For several years NMDOH has been trying to get changes through the legislature to decriminalize possession of fentanyl test strips. They had been classified as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kunm.org\/2022-01-30\/fentanyl-tests-strips-could-prevent-overdoses-but-theyre-often-not-allowed-to\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drug paraphernalia<\/a>, and so were legally off-limits to drug users and public health practitioners. That means that even users of other substances, which are now commonly cut with fentanyl, had&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/07\/05\/1013203805\/party-drugs-are-being-increasingly-laced-with-fentanyl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">no way of knowing<\/a>&nbsp;whether their drugs were more dangerous and more addictive than they bargained for. With no quality control in the illicit market, recreational drug users as well as those with the challenges of addiction wind up hooked and sometimes dead because of fentanyl.
