But we don\u2019t shy away from controversy on YNMG; we dig into it. School boards around the country have been among the new cultural battlegrounds where parents with differing political views fight for their respective moral values. Sometimes it gets ugly. In New Mexico we\u2019ve been talking about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kunm.org\/local-news\/2021-11-26\/students-pitch-in-to-make-nm-social-studies-standards-more-culturally-relevant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">updating social studies standards<\/a>&nbsp;for about a year. It\u2019s been about 20 years since the Public Education Department weighed in on that. Along with new ideas of trying to respect more perspectives in school curriculum has come the backlash over the perception of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/leadership\/what-is-critical-race-theory-and-why-is-it-under-attack\/2021\/05\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">critical race theory<\/a>&nbsp;sneaking in and harming our kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, we have Searchlight New Mexico\u2019s education reporter, Alicia Inez Guzm\u00e1n.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/searchlightnm.org\/battle-over-critical-race-theory-reaches-new-mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">She recently published an article<\/a>&nbsp;that touches on inequities in instruction &#8211; the longstanding challenge of implementing a fair and sufficient public education for all New Mexican kids as outlined in the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/nmpovertylaw.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Graphic-Yazzie-Martinez-Decision.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yazzie-Martinez lawsuit<\/a>&nbsp;&#8211; as well as gender equity, and critical race theory, or CRT.
