State Auditor Brian Colon announced that he was moving ahead with a special audit of the Governor&#8217;s discretionary fund, after local reporting discovered more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kob.com\/new-mexico-news\/4inv-gov-spent-thousands-in-food-booze-dry-cleaning-in-2020-with-taxpayer-dollars\/6030837\/?cat=12387\"><strong>$13,000 in groceries, liquor purchase<\/strong><strong>s<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;and dry cleaning over a six-month period in 2020. A group of Republican lawmakers also requested the audit in a letter to Auditor Colon. The Governor&#8217;s office has said the purchases were appropriate but may have been excessive at times.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the House, we saw movement on <a href=\"https:\/\/nmlegis.gov\/Legislation\/Legislation?Chamber=H&amp;LegType=B&amp;LegNo=111&amp;year=21\"><strong>HB 111<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;which would offer new protections to tenants in the middle of an emergency like the ongoing pandemic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NMPBS has done a lot of reporting on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qmk9MH3DQ9A&amp;list=PL0QUHGaLftJj_TNk7_qx5l5R-AorkkweX\"><strong>evictions<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;and the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/v0Gr0DivN_w\"><strong>housing crunch<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;in recent months. You can find all of that on the New Mexico in Focus website.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nmlegis.gov\/Legislation\/Legislation?Chamber=S&amp;LegType=B&amp;LegNo=2&amp;year=21\"><strong>Senate Bill 2<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;also passed a full House vote yesterday. Tis proposal would forgive liquor license renewal fees for a year, to give struggling businesses a boost during the ongoing COVID-19 struggles. It is now headed to the Governor&#8217;s desk for a signature.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this episode, we also talk about <a href=\"https:\/\/nmlegis.gov\/Legislation\/Legislation?Chamber=S&amp;LegType=B&amp;LegNo=168&amp;year=21\"><strong>Senate Bill 168 <\/strong><\/a>which would raise the gas tax by five cents a gallon to fund much needed road repairs. We mentioned a great article that explains more in depth why those repairs are so needed. We encourage you to read that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.santafenewmexican.com\/news\/legislature\/report-condition-of-new-mexico-roads-a-complete-disaster\/article_8077d940-7d15-11eb-9138-5b5631f5f06f.html\"><strong>reporting<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;by Daniel Chacon at the Santa Fe New Mexican.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s Friday which means a new episode of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newmexicopbs.org\/productions\/newmexicoinfocus\/\"><strong>New Mexico in Focus<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;on NMPBS. The Line opinion panel will be delving into several legislative issue, including predatory lending reform and cannabis legalization. And, we also have interviews with Dr. Anthony Fauci and Senator Martin Heinrich. Tune in tonight at 7pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking of cannabis legalization, Saturday will be a big day for advocates on both sides of that issue. The Senate Tax, Business and Transportation Committee will be working to build consensus on a singular effort to legalize. Right now there are at least three competing bills still alive, and the clock is speeding up.
