The&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/humansofnewmexico.com\/\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #00009c;\">Humans of New Mexico<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #141412;\">&nbsp;collective wants to highlight the stories of everyday people. The online project is run by students, community members, and community leaders. Maybe you&#8217;ve seen some of the photos and interviews on Facebook. Our producer Sarah Gustavus sat down earlier this year with two members of the project, Sradha Patel and Georgia Weiss-Elliott, to learn more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; margin: 0in 0in .25in 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #141412;\">Interview with&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/humansofnewmexico.com\/2016\/12\/12\/van-overton-jr\/\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #00009c;\">Van Overton Jr.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; background: white;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #141412;\">&#8220;I look at everything I do through the filter of, \u201cIs what I\u2019m doing right now, helping or hurting children?\u201d Every single thing that I do.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; background: white;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #141412;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; background: white;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #141412;\">Every single thing that I do, even when I am standing behind a bar, [chuckles] you know, late at night, I ask myself that question and the answer is typically, \u201cIt\u2019s helping,\u201d because it\u2019s allowing me to eat and feed my family, and so it\u2019s definitely helping and right now it\u2019s just a means to an end but the number of organizations I\u2019ve yet to join, I don\u2019t know.&nbsp;But I know that there is more out there, there\u2019s more that needs to be started. There\u2019s a lot more work that needs to be done and so I hope to join more organizations or start more organizations or whatever that will eventually change the lives of all the children in our world, you know, and how I\u2019m doing that is starting locally, and knowing that if everybody can think first about children that it will change the way we do everything.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; background: white;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #141412;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; background: white;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #141412;\">Interview with&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/humansofnewmexico.com\/2016\/07\/18\/tierra-hudson-moriarty-nm\/\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #00009c;\">Tierra Hudson<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; background: white;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #141412;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white; margin: 0in 0in .25in 0in;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial; color: #141412;\">&#8220;At my high school I\u2019m probably 1 of 5 of African-Americans. And the way I look people are going to perceive as African-American you know? So that\u2019s how I carry myself. I try to carry myself positively. I want to say it\u2019s not hard, but it\u2019s a little more difficult because I\u2019m finding a place where I feel like I belong. Especially being in a rural area, I don\u2019t have a lot of people; I mean I have my family you know. But the other thing is I have a lot of kids in my high school who will tell me \u201cyou\u2019re getting these opportunities because of your race\u201d you know, \u201cbecause you have these things.\u201d And, it\u2019s at the point where I\u2019m just like, I\u2019ve worked hard for where I come from and if my race has anything to do with it, awesome.
