The Cost of Energy

The state Public Regulation Commission (PRC) recently rejected PNM’s request for a rate hike and new fees for residential solar customers. However, the state’s largest utility is expected to re-file a rate request. The PRC is also considering a rate increase request from El Paso Electric, which serves customers in Las Cruces and southern New Mexico. The PRC delayed a decision this week on the future of the San Juan Generating Station, a coal-fired power plant in northwestern New Mexico. PNM is seeking to shut down two of the four units at the plant to bring the facility into compliance with federal haze regulations.

NMiF producer Sarah Gustavus sat down this week with a representative from PNM, the solar industry and a grassroots organizing group to talk about the cost of energy and how we might plan for future energy needs in New Mexico.
