New Mexico in Focus presents a series of profiles of Native voters, funded by Vision Maker Media and focusing on issues important to Native Americans and their communities. Over four weeks, NMiFpresents a 5-part series, Elections 2016: Voting For Future Generations. The topics include: Education (Sept. 30), Economic Development (Oct. 7), Environment -2 parts (Oct 14), and Justice (Oct. 21). This program is produced by New Mexico PBS for a presentation of Vision Maker Media with major funding provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Native Voter Series: Voting for Future Generations (Justice)

In the final installment of Elections 2016: Voting For Future Generations, hear from two young leaders in the Pueblo of Acoma who are playing key roles in legal efforts to bring sacred items that were removed from the pueblo. Aaron Sims is an attorney for the tribe and Jonathan Sims currently serves on the tribal council. We also hear from activists from tribes across the country who are part of The Red Nation in Albuquerque, which has protested how Native Americans and other people of color have been treated by police officers and guards in the local jail.

Antonia Gonzales, NMiF correspondent and co-producer of the Elections 2016: Voting For Future Generations series and anchor/producer of National Native News, talks with Zachariah and Joe Ben, young farmers who took action to help elders who struggled to maintain their farms after the devastating Gold King Mine waste spill in 2015. They share insights on the cultural and economic importance of farming for families in the Shiprock area of the Navajo Nation. They also talk about how these environmental issues affect their thought process heading into the 2016 elections. (This is the second of two segments looking at environment issues and the Native Vote).
