Mayor Tim Keller on Albuquerque’s Response to Oñate Violence

June 19, 2020 – Protests over racial injustice sparked renewed conflict in Albuquerque over statues glorifying the Spanish colonial leader Don Juan de Oñate, decried in his own time for his extraordinary brutality. As protesters attempted to tear down an Oñate statue in the city’s Old Town, armed militia members surrounded the statue and one man was shot—the same day Mayor Tim Keller announced the formation of a new Community Safety Department.
