A New Jobs Plan Based on an Old Model

March 5, 2021 – This year, like last, New Mexico Sen. Martin Heinrich has introduced the 21st Century Conservation Corps Act. If passed, the bill would allocate additional funding to federal agencies, including the Forest Service and the U.S. Department of the Interior, to create new jobs related to landscape restoration, urban and community forestry, and watershed management. The legislation is modeled after the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s, the signs of which are still visible around New Mexico in places like Bandelier National Monument and Hyde Memorial State Park.
