The two parties are locked in litigation as the state\u00a0tries\u00a0to\u00a0compel the U.S. Department of Defense to clean up the toxic pollution, as well as map its spread.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, the Pentagon\u00a0says\u00a0it needs to study\u00a0the possibility\u00a0that\u00a0PFAS\u00a0polluted\u00a0groundwater at five other places in the state: Fort Wingate, the Army National Guard armories in Rio Rancho and Roswell, the Army Aviation Support Facility in Santa Fe, and White Sands Missile Range.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the final segment of our series of videos about New Mexico&#8217;s PFAS contamination from the military, we\u00a0explore\u00a0how\u00a0issues\u00a0of pollution, accountability, and transparency aren&#8217;t novel to the many New Mexico communities still facing the environmental and health fallout of uranium mining, nuclear weapons\u00a0development and\u00a0testing, and other types of pollution from military and weapons-related activities.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t<center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GZBy2Hs2xUo\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center>\n\t<p>On December 18, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released interim guidelines for destroying and disposing of materials that contain PFAS.\u00a0According to a statement from Dr. Olga\u00a0Naidenko, vice president for science investigations at the Environmental Working Group, the EPA&#8217;s guidance does not demonstrate\u00a0safe and effective\u00a0disposal methods.\u00a0Those\u00a0guidelines\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.regulations.gov\/document?D=EPA-HQ-OLEM-2020-0527-0002\">are available online at the Federal Register<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Like many other problems, action on PFAS will\u00a0need to be addressed by the incoming\u00a0administration of\u00a0President-elect\u00a0Joe Biden, who pledged during the campaign\u00a0that his\u00a0administration\u00a0will act on &#8220;designating PFAS as a hazardous substance, setting enforceable limits for PFAS in the Safe Drinking Water Act, prioritizing substitutes through procurement, and accelerating toxicity studies and research on PFAS.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<i>Portsmouth Herald<\/i>\u00a0reports that\u00a0another type of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fosters.com\/story\/news\/local\/2020\/12\/19\/pfas-wells-coakley-landfill-portsmouth\/3962389001\/\">PFAS has been found in wells\u00a0near the Coakley Landfill Superfund site<\/a>\u00a0in New Hampshire.\u00a0From the story by Jeff McMenemy:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a letter to homeowners near the Coakley Landfill, Christopher Buckman of CES, Inc., which works for the Coakley Landfill Group (CLG), mentioned PFOSA.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In particular,\u00a0perfluorooctanesulfonamide\u00a0(PFOSA), a PFAS compound with no regulatory standards, was reported as detected at most locations during the spring 2020 sampling event at higher values than the fall 2019 results,&#8221; he said in the letter. &#8220;Our review indicates that not all of the detections for this and other PFAS compounds are related to the Coakley Landfill. The CLG will continue to monitor both the regulated and non-regulated PFAS compounds to better establish distribution, trends, and sources for the detections.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Wisconsin, efforts to tighten up regulations on firefighting foams that contain PFAS have been thwarted by state Republicans. For the\u00a0<i>W<\/i><i>isconsin<\/i><i>\u00a0Examiner<\/i>, Erik Gunn\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wisconsinexaminer.com\/2020\/12\/19\/gop-lawmakers-wipe-out-parts-of-pfas-emergency-rule\/\">reports that GOP lawmakers stripped parts of an emergency rule<\/a>:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Republicans on the Joint Committee for the Review of Administrative Rules\u00a0said the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) rule went outside the bounds of the legislation passed earlier this year that bans PFAS-containing firefighting foam except in limited circumstances. Democrats accused the majority of bowing to corporate pressure to &#8220;take the teeth out of a rule that the DNR has worked on so diligently,&#8221; in the words of Rep. Gary Hebl (D-Sun Prairie).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On the Farmington River,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wnpr.org\/post\/health-officials-lift-pfas-contamination-advisory-farmington-river\">Connecticut public health officials have given the all-clear<\/a>\u00a0for anglers to eat fish from the river again. After a spill at Bradley International Airport sent PFAS-laden\u00a0toxins into the river in June 2019, the state implemented an advisory\u00a0against eating fish from portions of the river.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<i>The<\/i><i>\u00a0Guardian<\/i>, Rob\u00a0Bilott-the attorney\u00a0upon\u00a0whom the films\u00a0&#8220;Dark Waters&#8221;\u00a0and\u00a0&#8220;The Devil We Know&#8221;\u00a0are\u00a0based-hits\u00a0upon an uncomfortable truth. A small group of corporations and people have\u00a0profited\u00a0from the manufacture of PFAS, which is now\u00a0found in the blood of\u00a0humans\u00a0across\u00a0the\u00a0planet.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2020\/dec\/17\/dark-waters-pfas-ticking-chemical-time-bomb-in-your-blood\">Bilott writes of how in 1998<\/a>, a West Virginia farmer whose cattle were dying approached him about the &#8220;white foaming crud defiling his creek where his cattle drank&#8221;:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Getting the answers\u00a0required\u00a0over two decades of litigation, continuing to this day. But like the cattle and other animals on his farm, Earl would not survive long enough to get all his answers. The dark secrets deliberately withheld\u00a0from\u00a0Earl about his creek and his dying cows, went far beyond his property line. The poison flowing into Earl&#8217;s creek was also leaching into the drinking water of 70,000 of his neighbors, but no one was being told a thing. And this was just the tip of the iceberg. In secret, the poison had in fact streamed\u00a0all across\u00a0the country, and into the bloodstreams of virtually every American.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Indeed,\u00a0PFAS have been found far beyond the United States. A new study shows they&#8217;re also atop Mount Everest-shed from the waterproof gear used by\u00a0adventurers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That study,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0048969720379523\">&#8220;Deposition of PFAS &#8216;forever chemicals&#8217; on Mt. Everest,&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0was published in\u00a0<i>Science of the Total Environment<\/i>. On its site,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2020-12-miner-outdoor-gear-chemicals-everest.html\">the American Institute of Physics has a summary<\/a>:\u00a0&#8220;This marks the first time that Everest snow and meltwater has been analyzed for PFAS, [lead author Kimberley] Miner says. The highest concentrations-which were found at Base Camp and Camp II-are two to three times higher than concentrations found in any other alpine environment.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The samples, according to Miner, are from Nepal but illustrate that &#8220;PFAS are everywhere.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n\t<p>If you&#8217;ve been affected by PFAS contamination in your community here in New Mexico, call our tip line at (505) 433-7242.
