We’ve just released the fourth in a series of videos about PFAS contamination in New Mexico.\u00a0This one focuses on eastern New Mexico’s water problems.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

In August 2018, the U.S. Air Force revealed there were PFAS in the soils and waters below Cannon Air Force Base. More than two years later, dairy farmers like Art Schaap are\u00a0still waiting for relief<\/a>, the drinking water utility in Clovis\u00a0has shut down drinking water wells<\/a>, and the military and the state of New Mexico are\u00a0locked in legal battle<\/a>\u00a0over cleanup.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, New Mexicans are footing the\u00a0bill for more water studies<\/a>\u00a0to learn where the toxic chemicals are and how they’re moving. And as groundwater levels continue to drop\u2014due to decades of\u00a0overpumping\u00a0of the Ogallala Aquifer\u2014the federal government is building a pipeline to bring more water to the region from the Canadian River and Ute Lake.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In Michigan,\u00a0state officials are launching a multi-year study among people<\/a>\u00a0who\u00a0lived in two western Michigan towns where drinking water was contaminated with\u00a0PFAS.\u00a0From the story in the\u00a0Ionia Sentinel-Standard<\/i>:\u00a0<\/p>\n

In 2018, state officials found high\u00a0levels of PFAS compounds in the city of Parchment\u2019s municipal water supply, which also supplied customers in Cooper Township.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In 2017, PFAS were found in water systems near Belmont, near a site where shoe company Wolverine formerly disposed of sludge used to tan pigskin.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In Tucson, PFAS\u00a0from the airport and Davis-Monthan Air Force Base\u00a0has polluted almost 20 \u201cbackup\u201d groundwater wells.\u00a0Ariana Brocious reports that the state is working on that cleanup<\/a>:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tucson Water Director Tim Thomure said\u00a0it’s\u00a0important people know that our current water supply does not contain PFAS, especially since most city water currently comes from the Colorado River. The contaminated wells located north of Davis-Monthan were disconnected from the drinking water system in 2018. But the affected wells are part of the city’s backup supply of groundwater for the future.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Additionally,\u00a0airports in Nebraska are on the lookout for PFAS<\/a>, which is found in fire suppression foams. And\u00a0residents in Mayville, New York, are under a\u00a0water advisory<\/a>\u00a0after PFAS was found in three of the village\u2019s drinking wells\u00a0and being\u00a0supplied a\u00a0case of water per day<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t
