we use to protect ourselves, PFAS are everywhere\n\t<\/h1>\n\t<p>Laura Paskus<\/p>\n<p><em>December 8, 2020<\/em><\/p>\n\t<p>The\u00a0<i>Boston Globe<\/i>\u00a0reports that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2020\/12\/01\/metro\/toxic-forever-chemicals-found-pesticide-used-millions-mass-acres-when-spraying-mosquitos\/\">PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, have been found in the pesticides<\/a>\u00a0that the state has used for two decades\u00a0to\u00a0spray millions of acres in Massachusetts for mosquito control.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the story by David Abel:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The amount of some of the chemicals found in the pesticide \u2014 which has been used in at least 25\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.peer.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/State-use-of-Anvil-1010-updated-11.9.20.pdf?eType=EmailBlastContent&amp;eId=1c783f1a-fbb9-4fe2-b9b5-a694dc19b99e\">other states<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 exceeds\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2020\/09\/24\/metro\/state-regulators-issue-new-restrictions-forever-chemicals\/?p1=Article_Inline_Text_Link\">recent safety limits<\/a>\u00a0imposed by the state for drinking water. Given the amount of pesticide used, and how widely it has been dispersed over the years, specialists say it\u2019s likely that the chemicals have leached into ground water and other water sources.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Colorado, state agencies are looking into\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/denver.cbslocal.com\/2020\/12\/07\/colorado-health-water-pfas-agriculture-cdphe-firefighting-foam-irrigation\/\">how much PFAS make\u00a0it into waterways and then onto crops and consumer\u2019s plates.<\/a>\u00a0According to a story from CBSN Denver,\u00a0\u201cThe Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the Colorado Department of Agriculture are examining the potential contamination of irrigation waterways in areas that have previously been tested for contamination of drinking water.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That news report also links to a recent study from the Colorado School of Mines\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.minesnewsroom.com\/news\/first-its-kind-study-estimates-daily-pfas-dietary-exposure-vegetables-adults-and-children\">that models how PFAS might make\u00a0\u201ctheir way through irrigation systems and into edible plants.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><i>Bloomberg Law<\/i>\u00a0reports on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/pfas-project\/firefighters-fret-over-health-threats-from-what-protects-them?utm_medium=lawdesk&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;campaign=7A70048A-3483-11EB-B969-BBC84F017A06\">fears firefighters have over exposure to PFAS<\/a>\u00a0and a lawsuit in California that focuses not\u00a0only on\u00a0exposure via\u00a0firefighting\u00a0foams known to contain PFAS, but\u00a0also\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0protective gear\u00a0they wore\u00a0that contained\u00a0the toxic\u00a0substances.\u00a0Elizabeth Pritzker of Pritzker Levine LLP is representing more than 20 firefighters in a lawsuit against manufacturers, including 3M Co., W.L. Gore &amp; Associates, and Johnson Controls Inc. Andrew Wallender and Fatima Hussein report:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The plaintiffs were all diagnosed with cancers\u2014nine with prostate cancer like\u00a0[firefighter Paul]\u00a0Cotter\u2014and had PFAS in their blood well above national averages, which Pritzker called \u201ca substantial causational link.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think it\u2019s going to bring about change in the industry, and ideally give them compensation for their injuries,\u201d she said of her lawsuit.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The companies have all denied wrongdoing. A spokesperson for 3M said that 3M Scott Fire &amp; Safety \u201cuses limited quantities of certain fluoropolymers in components of firefighter protective equipment.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is clearly a problem for firefighters everywhere\u2014and the challenge of protecting firefighters\u00a0and local waters\u00a0seems immense.\u00a0Some states have been moving forward with such\u00a0efforts, including\u00a0banning the use of foams with PFAS, tracking their use and warning well owners after a fire has been extinguished on their property,\u00a0and\u00a0buying up\u00a0the toxic\u00a0foams local departments have on hand.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gregory B. Hladky writes about the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ctwatchdog.com\/misc\/states-efforts-to-end-use-of-toxic-firefighting-foam-slowed-during-pandemic\">efforts in Connecticut<\/a>:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All over Connecticut, fire departments faced with dangerous fuel and chemical fires are routinely spraying this type of hazardous PFAS foam on roads, private property, at marinas and industrial sites.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In September and October alone, PFAS foam was used to extinguish fires in Greenwich, Fairfield, Stamford, Norwalk, Milford, East Granby, and Woodstock, according to state records.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe get lists of [PFAS] discharges by fire departments\u2026 sometimes dozens of times a month,\u201d [Ray Frigon, an environmental analyst with the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection] said in a recent interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But,\u00a0Hladky continues, those efforts are lagging: \u201cThe COVID-19 pandemic has caused delays in the state\u2019s efforts on PFAS, and questions about safely disposing or storing these hazardous firefighting chemicals are also becoming a potentially costly headache.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Union of Concerned Scientists published a piece,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ucsusa.org\/science-blogger\/what-lessons-should-we-learn-from-the-pfas-crisis\">\u201cWhat Lessons Should We Learn from the PFAS Crisis?\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Among other things, Lauren Richter,\u00a0Alissa Cordner, and\u00a0Phil Brown look at the history of U.S. chemical regulation and the \u201ctremendous pressure\u201d the chemical industry exerted during 1970s when the Toxic Control\u00a0Substances\u00a0Act was negotiated.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They write:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What does this mean today? When we interviewed scientists, exposed community members, regulators, and industry staff about PFAS, we were frequently told that our society\u2019s ignorance about PFAS is a direct consequence of TSCA\u2019s weaknesses. We learned that chemicals are typically approved in a pro forma fashion that is rushed through EPA and that hides chemical composition due to industry capacity to claim trade secret confidentiality. Hence, most chemicals are inadequately regulated, unmonitored, not tested for in the environment, and largely not treated in our drinking water and sewage treatment facilities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lastly,\u00a0<i>The Intercept<\/i>\u2019s Sharon Lerner reports\u00a0that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2020\/12\/02\/pfas-chemicals-products\/\">PFAS have been found in hundreds of additional products<\/a>, ranging from climbing ropes and guitar strings to eye shadow and lip liner.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lerner\u2019s story provides a useful overview of how PFAS are used in industrial and personal products, and how closely companies guard information about what\u2019s in the products we slather on our bodies, pour into a glass at dinner, or use to sanitize our hands.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t<p>If you\u2019ve been affected by PFAS contamination in your community here in New Mexico, call our tip line at (505) 433-7242.
