href=\"https:\/\/www.post-gazette.com\/news\/environment\/2020\/11\/23\/Forever-chemicals-pose-threat-dupont-3M-rob-bilott-PFAS-Dark-Waters-environment-health\/stories\/202011200169\">Don\u00a0Hopey\u00a0at the\u00a0<i>Pittsburgh Post-Gazette<\/i><\/a>\u00a0reported on a talk\u00a0that \u201cDark Waters\u201d attorney Rob\u00a0Bilott\u00a0gave recently about PFAS:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr.\u00a0Bilott, a former corporate attorney whose battle with DuPont about pervasive PFAS contamination in Parkersburg, W.Va., inspired the recent movie \u201cDark Waters,\u201d believes efforts to control the next generation of \u201cforever chemicals\u201d will go faster and be more successful.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s now a much broader public awareness out there because communities are sharing stories and recognizing they are seeing similar problems. And that points to how important public involvement is,\u201d Mr.\u00a0Bilott\u00a0said in a speech to about 100 people virtually attending the Women\u00a0For\u00a0a Healthy Environment\u2019s 10th anniversary program Wednesday evening.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In North Carolina, Greg Barnes reported that the\u00a0year-old\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.northcarolinahealthnews.org\/2020\/11\/23\/pittsboro-task-force-recommends-deep-discounts-so-poor-residents-can-afford-clean-drinking-water\/\">Pittsboro\u00a0Drinking Water Task Force\u00a0wants the town\u00a0to provide residents with discounted filtration systems<\/a>\u00a0until it finds a permanent solution to the presence of PFAS and other cancer-causing compounds in drinking water.\u00a0From the story:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the PFAS Testing Network, a consortium of researchers from seven North Carolina universities, released data showing total PFAS at\u00a0Pittsboro\u2019s\u00a0drinking water intake\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.northcarolinahealthnews.org\/2020\/09\/10\/state-lawmaker-says-fighting-pfas-in-nc-will-require-more-than-enforceable-standards\/\">measuring 844 parts per trillion<\/a>. That was the highest level discovered by the network after an initial sampling of 320 municipal water treatment plants throughout the state.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.nicholas.duke.edu\/pfas\/#\/ms-3694\/2\">Duke University study<\/a>\u00a0found that the concentrations of PFAS in\u00a0Pittsboro\u00a0residents\u2019 blood are two to four times higher than the U.S. population as a whole.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In New York, newly released data show that the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/riverheadlocal.com\/2020\/11\/21\/newly-released-data-disclose-navy-knew-of-toxic-pfas-chemicals-in-groundwater-at-grumman-fence-line-in-2016\/\">U.S. Navy did not\u00a0tell\u00a0the public that it knew PFAS were present<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0southern\u00a0boundary of\u00a0the former Grumman manufacturing site\u00a0in\u00a0Calverton. From the\u00a0<i>Riverhead<\/i><i>\u00a0Local<\/i>\u00a0story by Denise\u00a0Civiletti:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Detection of the chemicals at the southern boundary of the site is significant, because it supports the position of elected officials, environmental advocates and community members that the chemicals could migrate offsite and pose a risk to private drinking water wells in the area and the\u00a0Peconic\u00a0River.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Navy had not previously disclosed the data on PFAS chemicals in samples taken at the fence line system dating back to December 2017 \u2014 and in one instance, September 2016.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A Navy representative at an April 17, 2018 community meeting did reference sampling for PFAS at the fence line in the months prior to the meeting but did not provide the test results data.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And in<i>\u00a0The Guardian<\/i>, Oliver\u00a0Milman\u00a0reported that PFAS\u2014which is present within the blood of millions of Americans\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/nov\/17\/chemicals-found-in-everyday-products-could-hinder-covid-19-vaccine\">might reduce the effectiveness of COVID-19\u00a0vaccines<\/a>:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Research led by [Philippe\u00a0Grandjean, an adjunct professor of environmental health at the Harvard School of Public Health] has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6190594\/\">found<\/a>\u00a0that children exposed to PFAS had significantly reduced antibody concentrations after given tetanus and diphtheria vaccinations. A follow-up study of adult healthcare workers found similar results. Meanwhile, a certain type of PFAS, called\u00a0perfluorobutyrate\u00a0(or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.state.mn.us\/communities\/environment\/risk\/docs\/guidance\/gw\/pfbainfo.pdf\">PFBA<\/a>), accumulates in the lungs and can heighten the severity of illness suffered by people who are infected with Covid-19, separate research by\u00a0Grandjean,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2020.10.22.20217562v1\">yet to be peer-reviewed<\/a>, has suggested.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newmexicopbs.org\/productions\/groundwater-war\/2020\/10\/20\/study-shows-200-million-americans-drinking-pfas-tainted-water\/\">As we noted earlier this year<\/a>, a study published in the peer-reviewed journal,\u00a0<i>Environmental Science and Technology Letters<\/i>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/acs.estlett.0c00713\">estimates that 200 million Americans could have PFAS in their drinking water at levels of one part per trillion or more<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\t<p>If you\u2019ve been affected by PFAS contamination in your community here in New Mexico, call our tip line at (505) 433-7242.
