Five other military sites\u00a0in the state\u00a0have been identified as possibly having contaminated local waters, as well.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>PFAS contamination might not\u00a0garner\u00a0many headlines in New Mexico, but\u00a0all across\u00a0the country, communities are grappling with similar problems.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There are more than 7,000 chemicals in the PFAS family, and they share a few key traits \u2013 namely that they\u2019re\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newmexicopbs.org\/productions\/groundwater-war\/pfas-faq\/\">associated with an array of health problems and they\u2019re considered \u201cforever\u201d chemicals<\/a>\u00a0because they don\u2019t biodegrade.<\/p>\n<p>In Wisconsin, a well-known activist\u00a0has\u00a0been diagnosed with cancer.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodtv.com\/news\/target-8\/belmont-woman-fighting-pfas-diagnosed-with-cancer\/\">According to the story<\/a>:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>[Sandy] Wynn-Stelt\u00a0has lived more than 30 years across from the old House Street dump, where Wolverine Worldwide dumped PFAS-tainted sludge for years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The source of the PFAS was the Scotchgard that the Rockford-based shoemaker used for waterproofing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tests found 5 million parts per trillion of PFAS in her blood \u2014 the highest ever recorded in a human.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has yet to set regulatory limits on PFAS, but under the agency\u2019s health advisory, you shouldn\u2019t ingest more than 70 parts per trillion of two chemicals in the PFAS family\u2014PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) and PFOS (perfluorooctanesulfonic\u00a0acid)\u2014over the course of your lifetime.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the waters below Cannon Air Force Base in Clovis, PFAS levels were more than 370 times that lifetime limit. And at Holloman Air Force Base in Alamogordo, PFAS levels were more than 27,000 times the lifetime limit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/southernmarylandchronicle.com\/2020\/10\/10\/tests-find-low-levels-of-forever-chemicals-in-some-maryland-oysters\/\">PFAS\u00a0hasn\u2019t\u00a0shown\u00a0up in\u00a0the state\u2019s tests of\u00a0Maryland oysters<\/a>, according to a story from\u00a0<i>The Southern Maryland Chronicle<\/i>, but\u00a0activists are still concerned about low levels in the waters near\u00a0Naval Air Station Patuxent River. From the story by Timothy Wheeler:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sampling done by the Maryland Department of the Environment detected no PFAS, or per\u2013 and polyfluoroalkyl substances, in oysters collected from rivers and creeks near Naval Air Station Patuxent River. In that state, PFAS has been found in groundwater, surface water, drinking water, and the tissue of fish and animals.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>New Mexico doesn\u2019t have a PAFS Action Plan,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dnr.wisconsin.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/topic\/PFAS\/wispac\/DraftActionPlan20201001.pdf\">but if you\u2019re curious what Wisconsin\u2019s draft looks like, you can view it here<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><i>The Intercept\u00a0<\/i>takes an in-depth look into\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2020\/09\/29\/epa-white-house-pfas-pfoa-pfos\/\">the EPA\u2019s inaction regulating PFAS, and the U.S. Department of the Defense\u2019s inaction on cleanup.<\/a>\u00a0Without enforceable regulatory\u00a0limits, the military can continue to avoid responsibility for cleanup. According to Sharon Lerner\u2019s story:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The EPA hasn\u2019t officially backed away from its plan for the hazardous designation, but in January, the White House weighed in against the PFAS Action Act, saying that it \u201cwould create considerable litigation risk, set problematic and unreasonable rulemaking timelines and precedents, and impose substantial, unwarranted costs on Federal, State, and local agencies and other key stakeholders in both the public and private sectors.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some of the resistance in taking steps to regulate PFAS comes from the Department of Defense, according to Betsy Southerland, who worked at the EPA for 30 years and most recently served as director of science and technology in the Office of Water. Southerland resigned in protest of industry influence over the agency in 2017. The Defense Department reacted badly to the EPA\u2019s release of a drinking water health advisory for PFOA and PFOS in 2016, according to Southerland, who oversaw the work on the health advisory. \u201cDOD knew they had all this contamination, so they were furious,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lastly,\u00a0<i>The Diplomat<\/i>\u00a0looks at how\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2020\/10\/us-military-bases-are-poisoning-okinawa\/\">the U.S. military has polluted the drinking water of 450,000 Okinawans\u2014plus thousands of U.S. service members and their families\u2014with PFAS.<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\t<p>If you\u2019ve been affected by PFAS contamination in your community here in New Mexico, call our tip line at (505) 433-7242.
