McGill, Cathryn

NMPBS_McGill2

In the African tradition of griot, Cathryn McGill is a storyteller, sharing stories in word and song, while building, growing, energizing and engaging communities, creating positive change wherever she goes.

Since arriving in New Mexico in 1984, Cathy has not only used her voice in a musical setting to give people pleasure and entertainment, but also has a voice for social causes and civic dialogue on important social subjects.

While working at the Rape Crisis Center, she started an annual benefit called the SAVI Fair (loosely fashioned after the Lilith Fair) and organized and produced a fundraiser that used music, local talent and the stories of survivors of rape to raise money.

She also worked for 10 years for the National Dance Institute as the “voice” of all of their end of year fundraising shows throughout the state.
