Episode 803 – WIPP – Web Extra

Correspondent Gwyneth Doland continues the discussion of causes and concerns over the radiation leak that shut down the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in Carlsbad. Guests include NM Environment Department Secretary Ryan Flynn; Don Hancock, director of the Nuclear Waste Safety Program at the Southwest Research and Information Center; and George Anastas, a nuclear engineer who was part of the now-defunct Environmental Evaluation Group, which monitored WIPP. Joe Franco, the Carlsbad field office manager for the Department of Energy, who had joined the panel by telephone for the broadcast portion of this interview, was unable to rejoin the conversation for this online segment. Ryan expresses frustration that his department was not notified of the radiation leak by DOE for five days after it occurred.
