The Line: Albuquerque City Council Votes To Increase Gross Receipts Tax

March 9, 2018 – This week the Albuquerque City Council voted to increase the gross receipts tax by three-eighths of one percent in order to address a $40 million dollar deficit in the city’s budget and tackle the public safety crisis. One of Mayor Tim Keller’s campaign promises was that he would only raise taxes as a last resort, and then only after taking the issue to the city voters. But with the Council’s 8-1 vote, the decision was veto-proof, and Mayor Keller went on record saying he respects the Council’s action.
Gene Grant leads the Line panel in a discussion on the tax hike, which is set to go into effect July 1.

Line Panelists:
Dan Foley, former House minority whip
Tom Garrity, The Garrity Group PR
Inez Russell Gomez, opinion page editor for the Santa Fe New Mexican
