A look at childhood obesity

NMiF: Big Healthy Life

This week on New Mexico in Focus, we bring you the documentary "Big Healthy Life," which tackles the tough topic of childhood obesity.  We also follow up on a few key points with experts on nutrition and exercise.

NMiF host Gene Grant sits down with filmmaker Chris Schueler to share some insights about how he approached the issues in the film, including what makes New Mexico unique in the battle against childhood obesity, and the importance of involving the whole family in working towards healthy goals.

Gene also delves into a deeper discussion with registered dietician Patty Keane on such issues as food insecurity and ways families on a tight budget can make better nutritional choices

And student correspondent Anthony Herrera interviews two medical providers on the importance of exercise and active play in children’s lives.

Keeping children fed during the summer months, behavioral health resources for immigrants and refugees, a conversation with “The Radium Girls” author Kate More, and a push to add more information to an ethics commission measure that heads to the ballot next fall

NMiF: Mental Health

This week on New Mexico in Focus, correspondent Megan Kamerick sits down with local advocates who work with immigrants and refugees in part two in our series on behavioral health needs across our state. And she talks with Kate Moore, author of “The Radium Girls,” about how the poisoning of women who worked in factories with radium may have led to increased protections for workers in the Manhattan Project.

Producer Sarah Gustavus asks local experts what’s happening around New Mexico to address the gap in meals during the summer months when students can’t rely on breakfast and lunch at school. She also sits down with New Mexico in Depth data reporter Sandra Fish to talk about the latest reports on fundraising and lobbyist spending in Santa Fe.

And correspondent Gwyneth Doland and Douglas Carver from New Mexico Ethics Watch discuss the role for everyday New Mexicans in the creation of an independent ethics commission.
